p>Minecraft is an open world video game that was initially developed by Swedish programmer Markus "Notch" Persson and later developed and published by Mojang. Minecraft's building and creative features allow players to create constructions from textured cubes within the 3D world that is generated procedurally. Exploration, resource collection, crafting, combat, and other activities are all part of the game. There are several gameplay options available including survival mode, where the player has to gather resources to build a world and keep their health up and a creative mode in which players have unlimited resources to construct with and the ability to fly and explore, an adventure mode in which players play custom maps created by other players and a spectator mode where players can fly around and clip blocks, but they are unable to place blocks. The PC version is well-known for its third-party mods that add new characters, items and quests.

All versions of Minecraft receive periodic updates, with console editions being co-developed by 4J Studios.

Of the Game Developers Choice Awards, Minecraft was awarded the Innovation Award, Best Downloadable Game Award and Best Debut Game Award; from the Independent Games Festival, it won the Audience Award and the Seumas McNally? Grand Prize. In 2012, Minecraft was awarded a Golden Joystick Award in the category of the best downloadable game. As of June 2015 over 70 million copies were sold, with 20 million sold between the Xbox 360 and Xbox One and 20 million on PC,[13] making it the top-selling PC game to date and the third best-selling video game of all time. Microsoft announced on September 15, 2014 that it would buy Mojang and the ownership of Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5billion. The acquisition was completed November 6, 2014.
